Paul Pogba ‘very keen’ for Man Utd to sign €100m France team-mate

Manchester United star Paul Pogba wants his France team-mate Antoine Griezmann to join him at Old Trafford, according to a French reporter.

Griezmann was a target for United in the summer, but it’s understood the 26-year-old was unwilling to leave his club Atletico Madrid without a replacement due to their transfer embargo, and United instead signed Romelu Lukaku.

Diego Simeone’s side have had that embargo lifted and recently confirmed the signing of Diego Costa from Chelsea, which may well open the door for a transfer for Griezmann.

And now French reporter Juliens Laurens has told the BBC that Pogba is “very keen” for Atletico Madrid star Griezmann to sign for Jose Mourinho’s men.

“It’s going to be interesting because he hasn’t had a very good season so far compared to what we have been used to before,” Laurens told BBC Sport.

“He was very close to leaving in the summer but stayed being loyal to the club because they couldn’t sign anyone to play before January.

“Now it looks maybe like Barcelona will be his favourite destination, although I do not know if they will have the 100m euro to pay his release fee. His friend Paul Pogba is very keen for him to join Manchetser United so that remains a very credible option for him.

“There is also Real Madrid who at some point will have to buy a big name star. However, if he does not improve or have a good World Cup then some clubs will be put off. The release clause is quite affordable to most top clubs but his wages are very high. The next six months are going to be huge for him.”

Griezmann ended up signing a new contract with Atletico last summer, but he has struggled to find his best form in La Liga this season.

Barcelona are also believed to be interested in him, but after their £142million capture of Philippe Coutinho it is unlikely they will be able to meet Griezmann’s €100million buyout.

Griezmann has scored 90 times in 177 appearances in four seasons with Atletico, including eight goals in 22 games this season.
