Man City respond to Claude Puel’s claims about Mahrez saga

Manchester City have responded to Claude Puel’s claims that they showed a lack of respect during the Riyad Mahrez saga.

Leicester boss Puel hit out at the timing of City’s move for Mahrez, claiming it was disrespectful to make an approach for a star player just 48 hours before the close of the transfer window.

“We need perhaps some others’ respect,” Puel said of Manchester City’s approach for Mahrez at a press conference on Wednesday.

“To make solicitation just one or two days before the end of the transfer window, I don’t know if it’s normal. I can’t suffer this situation. Some teams can have a lot of possibility to replace players — they have a different situation to manage.

“We don’t have a lot of players with the same quality as Riyad. For some other teams, it’s not a difficulty to replace their players.”

However the Premier League leaders have hit back, with director of football Txiki Begiristain claiming that the Citizens first made contact with Leicester a week before deadline day.

They have also suggested that the Foxes offered encouragement at that time that they would listen to offers for the Algerian star.

Mahrez submitted a transfer request to try and force a move, before going AWOL when the deal collapsed. It is unknown whether Man City will return in the summer.
