Joe Gomez names Man Utd legend as one of three career influencers

Liverpool’s ever-improving defender Joe Gomez has revealed the player he most idolised growing up – but the Anfield faithful may not be best happy.

Gomez has produced some impressive displays at the heart of the Liverpool defence this season, with his partnership alongside Virgil van Dijk helping the Reds concede just one goal – and that a blooper by goalkeeper Alisson – all season.

The England defender has this week earned favourable comparisons with the legendary Bobby Moore this week – but Gomez admits that as a kid, he modelled his game on someone far closer to home.

“I probably idolise Rio Ferdinand and so on but when it comes down to it, I’m still a defender and I’ve got to enjoy the art of defending,” he said.

“I want to do all I can to inherit both aspects and I’m still learning and I want to study those players and even current ones as well.

“I look at even within our team, Virgil (van Dijk) is a great example to learn from. Here, John Stones is someone who I admire for his confidence and his ability on the ball. There’s a lot of top defenders around the world who I admire.”

Gomez has made the most of Dejan Lovren’s late arrival back to the club during pre-season to stake his claim as Van Dijk’s regular partner and on current form, it is hard to see the 21-year-old taking some shifting.

In fact, it’s even possible Liverpool supporters may even forgive their young defender for naming a former nemesis as his biggest idol.
